Ready?

Today there are more people online than every before and if your church doesn't have a website, then you are missing out on an opportunity to grow your church. Many people may think that creating a website is difficult and should be left up to the professionals. That is not the case. I like to put it like this, if you can create a Facebook page, then you can create a website.

When I first started designing websites it was back in 1998 and I used to use a program called Microsoft frontpage. I admit it was a little difficult and took a lot of research to learn how to put a basic website together.

I am happy to say that with the advancement of technology, it has made creating a website so much easier and so much quicker.

Steps To Creating A Website

There are really only 3 steps when it comes to creating a website:

  1. Choosing a Domain Name
  2. Choosing a Platform that will host your Website
  3. Creating Your Website

Let's take a look at each step and then I will give you access to my step-by-step tutorial and you will be on your way to creating you very first website. Also if you ever have any questions when creating your website, I would like to personally help you. I can be reached at support@creatingwebsite.org and I would love to hear from you.

Choosing A Domain Name

A domain name is the web address where your website is located. For example: when you type in facebook.com that is a domain name. Google.com that is a domain name. Yahoo.com that is a domain name. Whatever you type into the search engine browser to find a website is considered the domain name.

I like to look at it like this. Just like a house has an address for people to find it, so it is with a website, the domain name is the address that people type in to find your website.

When choosing a domain name for your church, you want it to be short, sweet and to the point. You want to avoid dashes, numbers and things that are hard to spell.

You want a domain name to be easy to remember. Such as www.theonfirechurch.com or www.churchonthemove.com

Another suggestion is to try and include the name of your church in your domain name. This is good for branding your church and helps people to remember your church and your domain name.

Choosing Web Hosting

Web hosting is the place that actually holds all the files for your website. Let's use the example of a house again. Just like a house has an address, you also need land to put the house on. Well that is how web hosting works. Your website needs a place to store all the files that make up your website and this is called website hosting. Also know as ” Web Hosting.

Now there are a few things that you want to consider when you are choosing a place that will host your website.

  1. How fast is the customer service, just in case you ever have issues with your site.
  2. How much is their monthly fees?
  3. How fast are their servers? Having a slow server can negatively affect your rankings in the google search engine. Basically, it can affect how many people are going to visit your website.

If you are barely starting out with your church website you can get web hosting as little as $4 to $5 a month.

I wouldn't stay at this level for too long, but it is a great place to get started.

Creating Your Website

Now comes the fun part and that is creating your website and like I mentioned earlier, with technology today creating a website has become very fast and easy. As a matter of fact, creating a website is so simple today that there is no reason why your church shouldn't have its own website.

Let me put it to you nicely. If your church doesn't have a website then you are missing out on so many opportunities to grow your church and you are outdated.

It doesn't have to be like that and the good news is I have put together a step-by-step video tutorial that shows you how to create a 5 page website for a church from scratch and for FREE.

This website will consists of a:

  • Home Page

Ok Let's Go…

1. Choosing your Domain Name

The domain name is the name that people visiting your website will type into the search bar.

how-to-build-a-responsive-church-website

Note: You want your domain name to be as short as possible. A motto that I like to use when choosing a domain name is short, sweet and to the point.

When choosing your domain name you may want to have a few options just in case your first choice is not available.

Here are a few examples of a domain name:

www.theonfirechurch.com

www.theblessedchurch.com

www.thecoolchurch.com

You would choose a domain name that fits your church. There are many domain extensions you can choose from such as .com, .org, .net and so on, but the most popular is .com. So, if you can get a domain name that ends with .com that would be a pleasant choice.

Click here to search for a new domain name.

2. Choosing your web hosting.

Now that you have chosen a domain name, the next thing you need to do is decide on your church website hosting company. Your web hosting company is the place that will store or in laymen’s terms “host” your website.

What is web hosting:

When you design a website, you need to store all your information, such as your files and folders. The place where you store this information is known as your “web host.”

There are many web hosting companies to choose from when you are looking to build a church website, but here are a few things to consider when choosing your web hosting company.

What to consider when choosing a “Web Hosting Company?”

Customer Service – How are their customer service reviews?

Storage – Unlimited storage is the best way to go.

Price – What is the price range? You can get blazing fast Managed WordPress hosting for about $49 a month. If you are barely starting out you can even get web hosting as cheap as $5 a month.

I know of a good web hosting company that has:

  • 24/7 customer service
  • Unlimited storage space
  • Unlimited Bandwidth
  • Blazing Fast Websites

They also have an online community which I am a part and will greet you there if you join. This community has step-by-step tutorials, 1 free website, 30 free keyword researches and more. Did I mention it is FREE?

They also have a premium membership where you pay, but the features you get are amazing and will really help you get traffic to your church's website. What good is a nice-looking website if you are not getting any traffic?

WordPress is very easy to use making it the perfect platform to build a church website, especially if you are new to church web design.

Installing WordPress

There are a ton of features that WordPress plugins can add to your website ranging from contact forms, to sermon managers, calendar events, and allowing giving on your website.

If you can think of a feature that you would like on your church’s website, I would dare to say that there is probably a WordPress Plugin that has that feature.

How to install WordPress Plugins:

Here is a step-by-step video of how to log into your WordPress Dashboard

Log into your WordPress Dashboard (you do this by going to your domain name followed by wp-admin

This is for Free Plugins that are included with WordPress

Now you have a plethora of plugins that you can choose from to add amazing features to your WordPress Website.

Here are a few recommended plugins that you can use for your church website.

5. Designing your website

Now comes the fun part, and that is when you get to design and start building a church website.

You may be thinking Fun Part? This is not the fun part, I don’t know the first thing about church websites; I don’t have any church website ideas, let alone knowing how to create a church website.

Well, I have been there before, and I want to let you know that it is possible, even if you have little to no experience designing a ministry website. I was in the place where I had been given the challenge of taking on our church website and I didn’t have much experience with website design.

So, I started searching for web design tools and researching topics for church website builders such as “what is the best website builder software”, “best church website templates”, and I also started watching tutorials on how to build your own website.

I have come to find out that when it comes to web design tools, there are a lot of excellent resources out there that are used by a lot of the top church websites.

Here are a few of the resources:

1. WordPress Themes

WordPress comes with a lot of Free Themes that you can use to get your website started.

If you would like to install the FREE WordPress Themes just go to your WordPress Dashboard > Appearance > Themes > Add New. Then choose the theme that best fits your church's website.

2. Website Builders:

Website Builders are very useful when it comes to building a website fast and especially if you are trying to build a website for the very first time. Some of the best church website builders can have you building a nice and professional looking website within a day.

There reason you can build a church website so quick when it comes to using a website builder to build a church website, is because they come with pre-made templates, stock photos, and click and drag options.

Here is a video of some short footage of me making changes to a website using a sitebuilder to make the changes:

Man, I wish they had these when I first started designing websites.

I have heard of someone being quoted $12,500 to redesign their website, but did you know that you can design your own website using a web builder for a fraction of that cost?

Here are some the prices ranges that you would pay per month depending on the features that you need for your church website, as each option has different features:

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A SITEBUILDER?

The Amazing thing about using Website Builders is that they come with pre-made web design layouts and all you have to do is update and customize the information for your church. To find the best church website builder you may have to experiment with a few of them yourself and see which one fits your need best.

3. Paid Plugins

Now you can use the FREE themes or the WordPress editor that comes free with WordPress and they will get you started, but if you want to take your church web design to another level, I would recommend the paid plugin called Thrive Architect.

Thrive Architect PlugIn

Thrive Architect is a “What You See Is What You Get” WordPress editor and it is easy to use. This is one of the best church website builders that I have used. 6. Optimize your church website using SEO

What good is it to have a church website that no one knows about?

That is why you need to do what is called SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization.  SEO is the process of optimizing your website to show up in search engines when people are searching for a certain topic or keyword.

You usually want to optimize your website for 2 or 3 keywords. They can be anything that you want, but whatever keywords you decide should be in your Title Tag, Meta Description and in your on-page SEO.

Example: You can optimize your church website to show up in the search engines when someone searches for “churches near me.” If you are on page one of google for this keyword, there is a good change that potential visitors will see your church’s website listing and click on it. Hence meaning this is an opportunity for them the get information on your church and maybe even pay you a visit. WOW!!! Who would have ever thought that even though you are new to church website design, now God is using the website that you designed to bring people into the House of God. That is good stuff right there.

How to do SEO for your church website

The basic process of optimizing your church website for search engines is basically 3 simple steps. Now there is more to it, but these are the basic steps. I have a blog that walks you through each one of these steps in more detail. If you are interested in reading that blog which has a lot of good information and SEO tips you can click here.

Step 1 – Optimize your Title Tag

Your title tag is the top part of your website listing that shows up in the search engines and is visible to potential visitors. You want the words of your Title Tag to be attractive and catch people’s attention because you want potential visitors to click on it.

You can change the information of your church's website by using the FREE version of the plugin SEO Press.

Step 2 – Optimize your Meta Description

Your Meta Description is the middle part of your website listing that shows up in the search engines and is visible to potential visitors. You want the information of your Meta Description to be attractive to potential viewers who might click on your google listing.

You also want the information in your Meta Description to be relevant to the information that is on your website.

You can change the information of your churches website Meta Description by using the FREE version of the plugin SEO Press.

Once again you can find more information on this topic by visiting my blog entitledStep by Step guide on how to improve your google ranking.”

Step 3 – Optimize your On-Page SEO

When you are designing your churches website you want to make sure that the content on your websites home page has your keywords in it.

Earlier I talked about optimizing your website for 2 or 3 keywords. Whatever keywords that you selected you want to make sure that they appear in the content on your websites home page.

Example: If I choose to optimize my churches website for the keywords:

  • Churches near me
  • Great church for you
  • The on-fire church

I want to make sure that these words appear in my Title Tag, my Meta Description and in my home page content.

7. Keep your website updated

Well, congratulations on learning how to create a church website.

Now that you have an excellent church website or should I say a great church website, it is important to make sure you keep your church website updated.

What you don’t want is a website that looks nice, but when someone visits your site, the information is outdated; it has a flyer from an event that was a month ago and it has old service times or there is a small group that has moved, but your website hasn’t updated the information.

I know I am mentioning Thrive Architect a lot, but that is another cool thing about Thrive Architect it makes it so easy to update your website.

Church Website Design Amazing Tips

Church Website Design

How To Learn Church Website Design

Are you frustrated because you have been trying to design a church website design, but you aren't making any progress?  Well in this blog we are going to give you some web design tips that will help you in accomplishing the task of creating a nice website for your church, ministry or christian music group.

Let's look at the facts, if your church is not online today and doesn't have a website, then you are pretty much looked at as outdated, but who has hundreds of dollars laying around in their budget to hire a web designer?

I would like to share with you some Church Web Design Tips that will help you design a church website for less than $100.  There are basically 3 things you need when it comes to designing a website – 1. Domain Name 2. Web Hosting 3. Web Design.

Let's take a look at each of these 3 things and the I will let you be on your way to creating your first website.

church-web-designlearn-how-to-design-your-own-website

1. Domain Name

The domain name is what people will type into the search bar to access your Church Website. Here are a few examples of a domain name.

  • Facebook.com
  • Yahoo.com
  • Youtube.com
  • Google.com

These are all examples of a domain name. When you type in facebook.com it will take you to the facebook page, when you type in google.com it will take you to the google web page, when you type in youtube.com that domain name will take you to the youtube website. So it is when you purchase a domain name it will take you the website that you build.  For example: You can purchase the domain “TheOnFireChurch.com” when someone types the domain “OnFireChurch.com” into the search bar your website will show up.

Now you may be asking where is the best place to get a domain and how much am I looking to pay for one. I usually get my domains from a place called “DomainPricedCheap.com” they are Christian owned and they have very good customer service their prices are very reasonable.

As a matter of fact, if you order a year of webhosting (which I will be teaching you about in the next point) with them, they will give you a domain name absolutely free for one year. The average price of a domain name for 1 year is about $9.99 and every year after that. Sometimes the renewal price may go up by a few dollars, but not too much.

Click Here to get your Domain Name Today from “Domain Priced Cheap”

church-web-designwhere-can-learn-how-to-design-a-church-website

2. Web Hosting

The next thing you will need when it comes to Church Web Design is a place to host your website. You will need to get your web hosting from a company that offers web hosting. Yes there is a way you can host your own website on a server that you own, but for beginners it is better to go with a web hosting company. This is a company that will store all the files of your website, such as audio sermons, files, flyers, media, and all the information you will have on your website.

If the domain name can be looked at as the address for your house. The web hosting company can be looked as the property that your house is built on. Like I mentioned earlier, This is where all the information of your website is stored.

When looking for a web hosting company you want to consider:

  • How much storage space will be available to you
  • How is their customer service (Is it 24 hours)
  • How many websites do they allow you to host (if you want more than one)
  • How many emails can you have on your account
  • Is there a Money Back Guarantee
  • What is their up-time percentage ( A good amount is 99.9% up-time)

Now depending on how much information you will have on your website, such as audio files, video clips, flyers .jpg files, text and other information will determine on the size of storage space you will need.

If you will be storing audio sermons on your website, then I have put some statistics together for you, so you can get an idea of how much storage space you will need. Here is an idea of how much space you will need for a 30 minute sermon

AudioA High quality audio sermon recorded at 96 kbps for 30 minutes will take up about 15mbA Medium quality audio sermon recorded at 48kbps for 30 minutes will take up about 8mbA Low quality audio sermon recorded at 24kbps for 30 minutes will take up about 4 mbVideoA one-minute video that is captured at 720p HD at 30fps will take up 60MB of storage space(You can also host your videos on a third party site, that will free you up from having to use space for video files on  your web storage)So these statistics will give you an idea of how much space you should be looking for when purchasing your website hosting company. Depending on if you will host your videos on a third party site such as YouTube, then you don't really need a lot of space for your videos. Now the good thing is that many web hosting companies offer unlimited storage for a decent price.

If you would like to order web hosting for your Church Website you can also order web hosting for a really good price from ” Domain Priced Cheap. “

Their package start as low as $2.49 a month, now that is not bad for a place to host your website.  You can click here to get this low price.

They even have a package for $7.49 a month and you get a FREE domain name for a year. You can click here to get this package.

Once you purchase your domain name and your web hosting, you are pretty much on your way to design a church website. The next and final part that you will need is to design your website.

3. Web Design

Now when I first started designing websites it was a little challenging and took a lot of work, but now a days with all the technology it makes creating your own website so much easier. There are many Online Website Builders that make Church Web Design simple and faster.

One of the Web Builders that I like to use when I am designing a website is called Thrive Architect, as a matter of fact I used it to design this website and a few others. Here are a few websites that I have created using this Website Builder if you would like to take a look.

Thrive Architect allows you to design a church website even if you have no web design experience. Believe me, if I can design this website using Thrive Architect then I know you can design a website, because I don't know coding and I am not a web designer. Back in the day you used to have to pay a web designer a lot of money to design a website. You had to know a little bit about coding or buy a program that would translate the coding for you, but now it is a whole different story.

When a management system called WordPress came along it changed the whole game. Now creating a website can be as simple as drag and drop.

If you would like to get started designing your very first website with Thrive Architect I have put a step by step video below. This video walks you through the process of how to design a WordPress website from scratch using Thrive Architect.

You can purchase your own copy of Thrive Architect for only $67 by clicking here.

  • You want to go for unlimited bandwidth if possible – Bandwidth determines how much information can be transferred from your website to those visiting your web pages.
  • You want to make sure the web hosting servers are fast – One of the factors to getting your website to rank high in the google search engines is the speed of your website.
  • You want 24/7 customer support in case you have any questions – Excellent customer support is very key especially if you are new to web hosting and may have questions about your website.
